Man found dead on East Anchorage road ID'd in homicide investigation

No suspects were being held Tuesday in the death of a 22-year-old man found on Campbell Airstrip Road early Monday, which remains under investigation as a homicide.

The Anchorage Police Department identified the victim as 22-year-old Michael Miquann Mitchell in a brief statement Tuesday, adding that his next of kin have been notified.

"No arrests or charges have been made, and the homicide investigation is ongoing," police wrote. "Additional information will be released as facts are confirmed in the case."

The discovery of Mitchell's body about 3 miles southeast of Tudor Road prompted police to close Campbell Airstrip Road near Stuckagain Heights for four hours beginning at about 8:30 a.m. Monday as they conducted an initial investigation.

Residents in the area reported hearing sounds similar to gunshots Monday morning, about five to 10 minutes before police and medics reached the area.

Police spokesperson Jennifer Castro said no further details on the investigation were immediately available Tuesday afternoon.

Court records show Mitchell pleaded guilty in Anchorage this year to a felony charge of misconduct involving controlled substances. He also entered a December guilty plea to a felony count of second-degree assault, in a string of violent Fairview encounters during a single evening more than two years ago.

According to charging documents in the assault case, Mitchell stomped on the head of a wheelchair-bound man near 14th Avenue and Fairbanks Street on the night of May 24, 2014, inflicting life-threatening injuries. Less than two hours later, he punched another man in the jaw at the Black Angus Inn, then challenged a security guard at the nearby Carrs Safeway store to a fight before police apprehended him.
