Manslaughter suspect turns himself in at Anchorage jail

Anchorage police say a man wanted in connection with the Aug. 5 death of Chaduer Chuol near Merrill Field has turned himself in.

Kuach C. Kuach, 19, surrendered at the Anchorage Correctional Complex shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a release from the Anchorage Police Department. The release offers no new details about the case, one of seven homicides over a month.

Chuol, also 19, was driving west on East Fifth Avenue at about 3 a.m. when his Honda Accord crossed into the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with a black pickup. Kuach, who survived the wreck in the Honda, was found with a gunshot wound to his arm; Chuol was ejected from the vehicle by the collision. Both were taken to a local hospital, where Chuol was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined a dark-colored pickup had been chasing the Honda before the crash. The Honda was involved in a shootout with the pickup, which is still being sought, police said.

The manslaughter charge against Kuach is based on his alleged activity before the crash.
