Kenai women charged with stealing mail, checks in Homer area

Alaska State Troopers have arrested two Kenai women accused of stealing mail and checks after a search of their vehicle following a random traffic stop uncovered a stack of letters that didn't belong to them.

Pamela J. Larson, 39 and Kimberly L. Scheaffer, 46, each face five felony counts of second-degree theft and a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree theft, according to a trooper dispatch.

Larson and Scheaffer were stopped by troopers at Homer Middle School just before 1:30 a.m. Aug. 10 when their sedan pulled into the wrong entrance of the school.

"During the contact troopers observed mail belonging to multiple persons from the Homer area," troopers wrote. "The mail did not belong to the occupants and they did not know the owners of the mail."

Troopers initially impounded the sedan while they waited for a search warrant from a judge.

"During the search warrant execution troopers located over 100 checks, multiple debit cards, personal documents and consumable goods that were all stolen," troopers wrote. "Also located was a small amount of methamphetamine."

Most of the mail was from addresses on East End Road, a troopers spokeswoman said.

After speaking with theft victims, troopers sought arrest warrants for the suspects, which were issued Monday. Anchorage police arrested Morgan, who was held on $5,000 bail with a court-approved third-party custodian required for her release.

Scheaffer was arrested Saturday in the Valley, with arraignment scheduled to take place Sunday at the Palmer Courthouse, according to court records.
