Anchorage man wanted on vehicular assault charges stemming from roundabout collision

An Anchorage man is wanted on charges of vehicular assault stemming from a three-vehicle collision with injuries at the Dowling Road roundabout in May.

A grand jury handed up the charges against 28-year-old Zachary Roland on Wednesday: first-degree assault, reckless driving and driving under the influence, according to District Attorney's Office release.

Roland could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, prosecutors said.

Superior Court Judge Pat McKay issued a warrant for Roland's arrest Wednesday night. McKay set bail at $5,000.

Police responded to the collision at about 5:35 p.m. on May 3 and a lengthy investigation ensued.

The crash happened in the western roundabout at Dowling Road and Seward Highway, said Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Renee Oistad.

Roland, driving a 2012 Jeep Patriot, approached the roundabout from the Seward offramp and failed to turn left onto Dowling Road, Oistad said. He struck two vehicles sitting side-by-side in the eastbound lanes of Dowling waiting to enter the roundabout, she said.

Roland's Jeep ended up on its roof, police said at that time. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver and passenger in one of the other vehicles went to the hospital, as well.
