Juneau woman, 19, flown to Anchorage after surviving gunshot wound to the head

A 19-year-old Juneau woman was transported to Anchorage after police in the capital city found her in a townhouse shot in the head.

The Juneau Police Department has not identified the victim.

On Friday shortly before noon, the police department got a report about a woman bleeding from the head at the townhouse, located on the 3600 block of Amalga Street, according to a release.

Officers and medics responded and found the local teenager. An investigation found she "had been shot in the head, but she was still alive," the release says. She was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital and later flown to Anchorage.

Lt. David Campbell said the injury was not self-inflicted.

The townhouse and the surrounding are were secured by investigators as they looked into what happened. Police said it is unclear how many people were in the residence at the time of the shooting.

There was one other person at the townhouse when police arrived, and investigators believe other witnesses left before police arrived, Campbell said. Officers are now conducting interviews and obtaining search warrants, he said.

JPD public safety manager Erann Kalwara said later Friday the investigation was continuing, but it appeared the incident was isolated and the people involved know each other.

Police are now seeking to contact two Juneau residents: 51-year-old Rafael Flores and 46-year-old Katherine Milton. Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to call police.
