Man armed with sword taken into custody

Anchorage police on Tuesday afternoon responded to a 'barricaded subject' who was reportedly armed with a sword, at a downtown office building.

Officers responded to a call about a man with a sword entering a building at 813 W. Third Ave. around 3:03 p.m. Tuesday. He "exhibited signs of a mental disorder," police said in a statement.

The law firm Ingaldson Maassen Fitzgerald lists its address as the scene of the incident, according to state records.

The office is directly behind the Nesbett Courthouse. Police closed down a single block of West Third Avenue while they tried to negotiate with the man.

"There is no one in danger at this time, and no one has been injured nor was anyone threatened with the sword," police said.

Police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said there were people inside the building when the man entered it but they were "cleared out," she said.

Police said in an update released around 9 p.m that the man was taken into custody without incident. The man was not identified.
