Anchorage man charged with murder in Palmer shooting

PALMER — A 40-year-old Anchorage man called 911 around 9:30 a.m. Monday to say he'd just killed someone in an apartment behind the Palmer McDonald's, court documents say.

The man, Duyvu Van Nguyen, told dispatchers he drove to Palmer from Anchorage and shot 32-year-old Tuan Q. Nguyen after his wife said Tuan had sexually assaulted her at an earlier date, according to a sworn affidavit filed with the murder charges.

Nguyen was charged with first-degree murder and scheduled for arraignment Tuesday afternoon in Palmer Superior Court.

Chief Lance Ketterling say Palmer police know of no familial or other relationship between the men.

Nguyen was waiting for police on the front porch of the small apartment building just off the Glenn Highway with his hands up and a 1911 .45-caliber pistol next to him, according to the affidavit, filed by Palmer police Cmdr. Dwayne Shelton. Nguyen was wearing a chest holster.

An officer found Tuan dead in a bedroom with a .45-caliber casing on the floor and two bullet wounds to the head, Shelton wrote.

A police sergeant interviewed Nguyen at the police station with an Alaska State Troopers investigator and a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent. He was read his rights in English and Vietnamese.

Nguyen's wife called during the interview and her husband told her not to talk with police without talking to an attorney, according to the affidavit. During the conversation with police, she didn't mention being sexually assaulted by Tuan, Shelton wrote.

Nguyen is being held at Mat-Su Pretrial Facility.
