Police deploy gas in Midtown standoff before arresting armed man

A man who brandished a handgun at people Wednesday night on Arctic Boulevard and then refused to leave a nearby residence was arrested early Thursday after officers deployed gas and SWAT teams, police say.

The man, identified as 52-year-old Allan Hernandez, was arrested at 5:40 a.m. at a residence on Chugach Way, according to an Anchorage Police Department update.

Hernandez surrendered after multiple gas deployments, according to police spokeswoman Kendra Doshier. He was taken into custody without further incident, Doshier said in an email.

Hernandez was charged with third-degree assault, third-degree weapons misconduct and reckless endangerment. He was being held at the Anchorage jail.

Officers were initially dispatched to Arctic after reports that a man was brandishing a weapon and pointing it at people, police said. No one was hurt.

Police located him at the residence on the 900 block of Chugach, they said. He was alone and refusing to come out.
