PALMER – Wasilla police officers shot and killed a man who stabbed his wife early Thursday morning, the police department said.
Around 4:30 a.m., officers were called to a home after a woman reported that her husband had threatened to "kill anyone in the house," according to Wasilla police.
When officers arrived, the man refused to come out of the house. Soon after, police heard a disturbance in the home, police said.
Officers confronted the man inside, police spokeswoman Amanda Graham said. He was armed with a knife and had stabbed the woman, according to police.
Police fired on the man, who died at the scene from gunshot wounds, they said.
The woman suffered "severe" injuries from the stabbing, Graham said. She was taken to a hospital.
When asked if the man had advanced toward the officers, Graham said she did not know and that the investigation was ongoing. She also said she believed he was not armed with additional weapons but couldn't confirm that.
"At the time they determined, based on the immediate situation, that he was a threat," Graham said.
Children were found physically unharmed in a downstairs bedroom. They were put into the care of the state Office of Childen's Services immediately afterward, Graham said, and would likely be placed with other family members.
The names of those involved will not be released pending next of kin notification, police said. The names of the officers involved will be released in 72 hours per department policy.
Police were not releasing the location of the shooting or the number of officers involved, Graham said.
The Alaska State Troopers will conduct an investigation into the shooting, she said.
The last time a member of the city's department was in an officer-involved shooting was 2014, when a Wasilla officer and an Alaska state trooper shot and killed a suspected drunken driver who tried to elude them.
"We don't have them very often," Graham said.
