Man shot while robbing Anchorage tanning salon, police say

A man was shot while robbing a South Anchorage tanning salon on Friday, police said, and they were looking for the man who shot him.

According to a statement from Anchorage police, officers responded to a report of shots fired at 12:10 p.m. Friday at the Sunsation Tanning Salon at 1130 West Dimond Blvd.

The robber, who police believe was unarmed, went into the business, police said. During the robbery, he got into a fight with another man who was inside the store. The other man shot the robbery suspect once in the lower body. After that, both men fled, police said.

Police are still trying to figure out if the man who shot the robbery suspect is an employee or patron of the salon, said spokesman MJ Thim. Police aren't sure if he had the gun on his person or if the gun had been in the store, Thim said. Several people were detained for questioning, he said.

"We need to find him and find out exactly what happened," Thim said.

The robber took an "undisclosed amount of money" from the salon, Thim said. He was found near King Street and West Dimond Boulevard in a white Ford F250. The man was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Anyone with information — including video surveillance — is asked to call APD's non-emergency line at 311 or submit an anonymous tip with Anchorage Crime Stoppers.
