Fairbanks man turns himself in for fatal Tuesday stabbing

Fairbanks police have arrested a man on murder charges in a fatal stabbing Tuesday morning, after the suspect turned himself in early Wednesday.

Police spokeswoman Yumi McCulloch said 23-year-old Charles Peter Yaska surrendered to police at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. He was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Claudius Jackson.

Police had initially responded to a residence on the 1500 block of 25th Avenue at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, after receiving reports of an assault.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered (Jackson) lying on the living room floor with multiple stab wounds," McCulloch wrote.

Medics took Jackson to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m.

Yaska was held at the Fairbanks Correctional Center on the murder charge, as well as an unrelated outstanding warrant.
