Homer Tribune back in print after going online-only in June

The Homer Tribune went online-only in June, but its new owners have revived the print edition, KBBI reported this week.

Jason Evans and his wife Kiana Peacock own Alaska Media LLC, which publishes the Arctic Sounder and the Bristol Bay Times-Dutch Harbor Fisherman. The company recently bought the Tribune, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this month, KBBI reported.

Evans said he thinks it's important to continue producing a tangible weekly newspaper.

"Online is a really active and important piece of the puzzle, especially in today's day and age," he told KBBI. "But we feel a printed paper is also really important. It is something that people can take with them to their camps. They can cut out photos and hang them on their refrigerator. As a weekly paper we feel like a print edition is still critical to the success of it and also adds to the community."

Jane Pascall was the paper's previous owner. She sold the Tribune to focus on her restaurant business, according to KBBI.

Evans said he and Peacock weren't looking to buy another newspaper, "but we do have some talented staff that live in Homer and so it was a natural to pick up the Homer Tribune and start publishing it as well," he told KBBI.

Carey Restino is the editor of the Homer Tribune. She said in an interview with Alaska Dispatch News that providing journalism at the local level in rural Alaska gives people in the community something they don't get when other news outlets "parachute" in from elsewhere.

"It's also in large part about bringing people together," she said. "There's a lot of sad social elements to small Alaska communities. And being able to shine light on the good things happening really provides people with something to be hopeful for, something to look forward to."

Evans and Peacock now live in Anchorage, the Tribune said in a post on its website, but they "remain connected" to rural communities.

Both the Homer Tribune and the Homer News, another community weekly newspaper, come out on Thursdays.
