Woman dies, child survives after ATV rolls over in Knik Valley creek

A woman died Sunday evening but an 8-year-old child was saved after their all-terrain vehicle overturned into a creek in the Knik River valley.

An Alaska State Troopers dispatch said next of kin for the woman, tentatively identified as 39-year-old Anchorage resident Ai Lor, were at the scene and notified when she was found dead in Friday Creek, about 10 miles up the Knik River from the Old Glenn Highway.

Troopers initially received a report that the woman and child were in the water at about 5:15 p.m. Sunday. A troopers riverboat and Helo-4 responded to the scene, along with a civilian riverboat in the area.

"Members of the ATV group were able to rescue the child from the overturned ATV," troopers wrote. "At approximately (5:57 p.m.) it was reported that the woman was located deceased approximately 150 yards downriver from where the ATV went in."

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email Monday that it wasn't clear whether the woman was driving the ATV when it rolled over, or how many people were in the vehicle at the time.

"Deep, swift water caused the machine to essentially be 'washed away' and up onto its side and roof," Peters wrote.

No charges or citations have been issued in the incident.

The woman's body was sent to the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
