Anchorage woman dead after Big Lake ATV wreck

An all-terrain vehicle crash Sunday evening in Big Lake claimed the life of a woman, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers wrote in a dispatch that they responded to a single-vehicle wreck at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

Twenty-six-year-old Anchorage resident Heather Garris "died of injuries sustained in the collision," troopers wrote.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said the crash took place on Papoose Twins Road near Isa Road. Medics arrived shortly afterward and declared Garris dead at the scene.

"She left the roadway and collided into trees," Peters wrote in an email Tuesday. "The ATV and rider rolled off an embankment."

Garris' body was taken to the State Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy following the crash, which troopers said remains under investigation. Garris' next of kin have been notified.
