Crash on Knik-Goose Bay Road kills Wasilla woman

A Wasilla woman died Wednesday afternoon when her SUV crashed along Knik-Goose Bay Road.

Alaska State Troopers arrived at the scene of the single-vehicle wreck that killed 49-year-old Lora Mahoney, near Mile 12 of the road, at about 3:15 p.m., according to a dispatch.

"On-scene investigation revealed that (Mahoney) was southbound on Knik-Goose Bay Road when her vehicle crossed the centerline, drove across the opposing lane of travel, left the roadway, and collided with a tree," troopers wrote. "Mahoney was pronounced deceased on scene."

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email Thursday morning that Mahoney had been the driver and sole occupant of a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche. She was wearing a seat belt during the crash, Peters said, but "not appropriately."

"It appears that the shoulder strap was tucked under her arm," Peters said.

Traffic on Knik-Goose Bay was reduced to a single lane until about 7 p.m., when the crash site was fully cleared.

The State Medical Examiner Office took Mahoney's body, as troopers' investigation of the crash continues.

Mahoney's next of kin have been notified.
