Air Guard rescues 1 from truck submerged in Cache Creek

A person was rescued Thursday from the hood of a submerged pickup near Trapper Creek by an Air National Guard helicopter pararescue crew.

Word of the trapped person on Cache Creek, near Mile 40 Petersville Road, first reached troopers just before 7:15 p.m. Thursday, troopers said in a dispatch.

"It was reported a male was standing on top of the hood of the vehicle, stranded, and unable to get to shore due to high water and severe rapids," troopers wrote. "The location was not accessible by road."

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said Friday that nothing further was immediately available on how the truck ended up in the creek.

The rescue request was relayed by troopers to the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.

Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, said two aircraft were launched "to locate an individual who was washed down Cache Creek" roughly 25 miles northwest of Talkeetna.

An HH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and an MC-130 search plane, visiting Alaska from the California Air National Guard's 130th Rescue Squadron, both responded. Pararescuemen from the helicopter rescued the uninjured male.

"He decided he did not need treatment and did not want transport to a medical facility," Olmstead said.

Troopers received word of the rescue by 9:35 p.m. Thursday.
