Anchorage hiker who went missing near Nancy Lake is safe, troopers say

An Anchorage man who went missing near Nancy Lake State Recreation Area is safe and uninjured, Alaska State Troopers said Monday.

Shang O. Yi, a 67-year-old Anchorage man, had "gotten lost" after sunset Sunday on a hike he started earlier in the day, troopers said Monday.

Troopers reached Yi on his cell phone around 9 a.m. Monday. Yi told troopers had found a camp and was safe. He was uninjured.

Trooper spokesperson Megan Peters initially said Yi had found shelter in a cabin, but early Monday evening Peters clarified that Yi had taken shelter underneath a tarp.

A search and rescue team trekked out to the camp, and around 2:45 p.m., escorted him back to his car at the Red Shirt Lake trailhead, near Nancy Lake Recreational Park in Willow, troopers said.

Troopers, park rangers, and Mat-SAR rescue group from the area helped with the search.

Authorities received the report that Yi was missing at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
