Driver killed in single vehicle collision on Parks Highway

One person died in a single-vehicle collision Friday morning on the Parks Highway near Meadow Lakes Loop, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers found a Ford pickup with a single occupant in the trees near the roadway around 11 a.m. on Friday, they said.

The driver, whom troopers later identified as 80-year-old Thomas Newton from Wasilla, was declared dead at the scene after lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

A preliminary investigation found that Newton appeared to have experienced a “medical event” right before the collision occurred, according to troopers.

An autopsy will be conducted. Next of kin have been notified.
