Man dead in Southwest Alaska shooting

A fatal shooting last weekend at a remote home in Southwest Alaska is under investigation by Alaska State Troopers.

A report came in shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday that 31-year-old Joseph Peterson had been shot on Ivanof Bay, according to a trooper dispatch. Alaska Bureau of Investigation members and troopers traveled to the bay on the Kupreanof Peninsula about 250 miles southeast of Dillingham.

"Investigation revealed that (Peterson) was shot and killed at a residence on Ivanof Bay," troopers wrote.

The dispatch didn't include any details on the nature of the shooting or whether any suspects had been identified or detained.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email Wednesday that nothing further was immediately available on the circumstances of Peterson's death.

"As it is an active and ongoing investigation, investigators are declining to provide any additional details at this time," Peters wrote.

Peterson's next of kin have been notified, troopers said. His body was sent to the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage.
