Girl, 10, dies after fall from four-wheeler in Grayling

A 10-year-old Anchorage girl's death after she fell from an all-terrain vehicle in Grayling this month remains under investigation by Alaska State Troopers.

Aaliyahellie Shangin-Andrews was fatally injured on Aug. 11, when she was riding a 2001 Honda four-wheeler driven by 18-year-old Kaitlin Andrews of Grayling, according to a trooper dispatch. The state medical examiner's office notified troopers on Aug. 19 that Shangin-Andrews died at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.

Investigating troopers ruled out drugs or alcohol as factors in Shangin-Andrews' death, adding that speed "does not appear to be a factor." Andrews was driving the four-wheeler along a gravel road in the Yukon River village in Western Alaska when she swerved to avoid a pothole.

"Aaliyahellie fell from the four-wheeler and struck the roadway," troopers wrote. "(She) was severely injured and subsequently medevacked to Anchorage."

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email that there wasn't any final word on whether charges or citations would be filed in Aaliyahellie's death.

"At this time, no charges have been filed," Peters wrote.
