Copper Center man dead in single-vehicle rollover near Tok

The sole occupant of a pickup truck that crashed Sunday on the Alaska Highway near Tok was killed in the collision, Alaska State Troopers said.

A trooper dispatch said responders reached the scene of the single-vehicle wreck, near Mile 1295 of the highway, just after 9:45 a.m. Sunday. Copper Center resident Carlton Pete, 19, died in the crash of his 2006 GMC Sierra according to an email from troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters.

"An investigation revealed the vehicle left the roadway and overturned," troopers wrote. "(Pete) was pronounced deceased on scene."

The collision remains under investigation, Peters said, but Pete was not wearing a seat belt. No conclusive factors have yet been identified in the crash.

"There were no signs of braking but there were signs of overcorrection," Peters wrote. "(The truck) ended up about 50 feet down an embankment into some trees. It was upright but it had obviously rolled."

Next of kin for Pete have been notified.
