Troopers: Vandalized runway lights prevent medevac landing in Southwest Alaska village

A medevac aircraft was unable to land in a Southwest Alaska village late Wednesday because all the runway lights had been broken, Alaska State Troopers said.

All 43 runway lights were vandalized at Kasigluk's airport between Tuesday and Wednesday night, according to troopers.

At around midnight Wednesday, a medevac flight was unable to land due to the broken lights, "preventing medical assistance for someone with an emergency," troopers said.

The medevac flight was delayed until daylight, troopers spokesperson Megan Peters said.

Kasigluk is a community of about 550 people northwest of Bethel.

The last time the lights were known to be working was Tuesday, troopers said. The damage is estimated at $1,600.

Alaska State Troopers asked anyone with information to call 907-543-2294.
