Two Nome women killed in single-vehicle rollover

Two women from Nome, both in their 20s, died in an accident early Tuesday morning near that Bering Sea community when their vehicle left the road and flipped several times, Alaska State Troopers say.

Christine Buffas, 21, was driving at a high rate of speed south on the Nome-Taylor Highway, also known as Kougarok Road, when she drove off the road and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to flip, troopers said Tuesday. Her passenger was 24-year-old Tiffany Habros. The crash was reported at about 12:30 a.m.

Neither wore seat belts, troopers said. They died at the scene.

The State Medical Examiner Office will conduct an autopsy.

The gravel road they drove runs 86 miles north from the Bering to the Kougarok River Bridge, about 25 miles from Taylor.
