Winter weather advisory issued across parts of Interior Alaska

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for a broad swath of Alaska, in many places lasting through late Sunday night.

The advisory stretches from the Tanana and Nenana areas up to Arctic Village, Ambler and other communities along the Brooks Range.

In the region including Ambler, Shungnak and Kobuk, the advisory said that "travel will be very difficult to impossible." Snow accumulations there are expected to reach 12 to 21 inches by Sunday night. Wind gusts as high as 30 mph may cause blowing snow, too.

In Coldfoot, Arctic Village and nearby areas, poor visibility and driving conditions can be expected and snow accumulations are forecast at 4 to 7 inches, the weather service said.

Snow, freezing rain and ice buildup are expected in Nenana, Tanana and surrounding communities. Slick roads will make for tough travel conditions, the weather service cautioned. The advisory there lasts through 6 a.m. Sunday.

A wind advisory is also in effect for areas including Healy, Denali National Park and eastward along the Alaska Range until 12 a.m. Sunday. The weather service expects winds gusting up to 60 mph.

You can find weather conditions for your community on the National Weather Service website.
