BUCKLAND -- Two snowmachiners who were stranded for nearly 24 hours after running out of gas were rescued cold but unharmed, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Eva Foxglove, 35, and Riley Armstrong, 41, were on their way to Buckland from Kotzebue when their machine ran out of gas about 25 miles from their destination around 1 a.m. Tuesday, troopers said.
Troopers were notified at about 8:30 a.m. that local searchers were unable to locate the missing pair, and troopers coordinated with Buckland Search and Rescue to continue the hunt. Blizzard conditions in the search area prevented the Kotzebue Civil Air Patrol from conducting aerial surveillance.
At about noon Tuesday, Foxglove and Armstrong contacted searchers using a VHF radio, saying they were in a shelter cabin and were waiting to be rescued. Rescuers returned them to Buckland on a snowmachine at about 11 p.m. Tuesday.
