Anchorage police out in force on Super Bowl weekend

The Baltimore Ravens will go head to head with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL's 47th Super Bowl game on Sunday. For many Alaskans, this is the perfect opportunity to gather with friends and family to celebrate, or deliberate, indulge and imbibe. However, police in Alaska's largest city warn fans they will be "out in force" throughout the weekend.

The Alaska Highway Safety Office has kicked the Anchorage Police Department some extra funding for "special details to target impaired drivers." Police will be on the lookout for suspicious behavior, reckless driving and following up on REDDI reports (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately).

Anchorage police say they will be "strictly enforcing impaired driving violations" over the Super Bowl weekend, warning that a "first arrest for (operating under the influence) can cost up to $25,000 and results in a criminal record that never goes away."

For information on alternative options if you anticipate you'll be too intoxicated to drive, visit the Anchorage Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurants & Retailers Association.
