The Anchorage Assembly approved two short-term contracts Tuesday night for hundreds of city union workers.
The contracts cover two unions -- operating engineers and electrical engineers. Both groups get a 2.7 percent wage increase for 2008 under the contracts.
Members of the electrical engineers union will also get an additional $2.33 per hour toward their retirement. Members of the operating engineers will get an additional 50 cents per hour.
The contracts are temporary, and both unions plan to negotiate longer-term contracts later this year. Together, the contracts would cost the city and its utilities -- such as Municipal Light & Power, Merrill Field and the Port of Anchorage -- about $2.1 million more.
