$10,000 worth of marijuana intercepted en route to rural Alaska

Western Alaska investigators say they've uncovered close to $10,000 worth of marijuana dope after checking out packages they say were headed to a pair of villages.

The first find of 83.3 grams came on Sept. 6 and was sewn into a teddy bear in a package full of children's toys, said Megan Peters, an Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman. It was headed to an "adult female" in Mountain Village along the lower Yukon River, troopers report.

The second find came on Sept. 27, when officers report finding a stash of 108 grams of marijuana inside clothing wrapped in plastic bags. Again, the dope was headed for an "adult female," but this time in the village of Aniak, up the Kuskokwim River from Bethel.

Investigations continue in both cases. Police say they've got suspects in the latest case.

Peters said weed usually sells in rural Alaska for about $50 a gram. The mark-up's higher on booze though, with a $30 bottle going for $300 in some areas.
