11 fishermen rescued in 2 incidents near Kodiak

Kodiak's KMXT-FM reports that eleven fishermen are safe after being rescued Wednesday by Coast Guard emergency crews from two separate incidents.

The 58-foot fishing vessel Kimberly ran aground in Portage Bay southwest of Kodiak about 8 p.m. Tuesday, but bad weather prevented rescue until Wednesday.

As helicopter crews were heading to the Kimberly, they were diverted by a mayday call from the 68-foot fishing vessel Heritage, which sank south of Kodiak Island.

The Coast Guard reports that all seven crew members of the Heritage were pulled up in good condition, five of them in a life raft by the Good Samaritan tug Tuxendi, and two in the water by Coast Guard helicopter.

Afterward, the Coast Guard continued on to rescue the four members of the Kimberly, all of whom were found suffering from varying ranges of hypothermia. Their current condition is unknown at this time.
