2 rescued, 1 dead following Kodiak plane crash

Alaska State Troopers report that two people were injured and one killed when a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter crashed near Kodiak on a flight from Old Harbor Friday evening.

An employee with the downed plane's operator, Paklook Air, said that the plane was headed toward Kodiak Airport and was about five minutes away when it went down.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a Jayhawk helicopter was flown in to assist with the rescue, and arrived at the scene at Kalsin Bay at 8:11 p.m.

The Coast Guard was able to rescue two people from the downed aircraft and transferred them to medical crews, who took them to Kodiak Island Providence Medical Center.

Alaska State Troopers reported that the third person and pilot of the aircraft, 49-year-old James Andie, died at the scene. The passengers had various injuries, troopers said, and one of the survivors called 911 from a cell phone.

The cause of the crash was not immediately available.
