Rain floods basements on east side

Heavy rain and hail hammered Anchorage this afternoon, causing flooding in some areas, according to the Anchorage Fire Department. The weather hit hardest in northeast Anchorage.

Calls were still coming in late this afternoon, but there had already been a handful of calls reporting flooded basements within minutes of the rain pouring down, said Anchorage Fire Department spokeswoman Cleo Hill.

Firefighters were still responding to those calls and would likely help pump water where needed, she said.

The fire department itself was experiencing flooding at Station 3 and the training center next door, she said. The center had accumulated about 2 inches of water in its basement, and crews were working to pump it out, Hill said.

The National Weather Service was calling for scattered showers though it warned some may contain heavy rain such as that falling on East Anchorage this afternoon.
