You can find deals by looking around

Even though oil prices are falling through the floor, travelers have not seen a corresponding drop in air fares. Part of the reason, I think, is that the pricing departments at major airlines are busy enjoying Christmas cookies because many of the flights later this month are full.

Of course, the luster of full flights will wear off dramatically in January, and I think there will be some meaningful discounts for travelers, particularly between Seattle and Anchorage. Within the state there still are great rates: Fairbanks from as little as $175 round trip and Bethel from $299 round trip. Both Era Aviation and Alaska Airlines have special rates.

There are great deals at Denali Park for next summer too. Denali Park Resorts offers Alaska residents a 50 percent discount at all four of their hotels: The McKinley Chalets, McKinley Village, Denali Bluffs and Grande Denali. That brings the starting rate down to $128 per night, Thursdays-Sundays. Watch for more great in-state deals in the coming weeks.

If you can get to Seattle, the deals are fabulous: $300 round trip from Seattle to Hawaii on Hawaiian Air, $50 each way Seattle-San Francisco and $70 each way Seattle-L.A. on Alaska Airlines. You even can fly from Seattle to Baltimore for about $90 on Southwest Airlines.

Most people, though, are packing up to take the trips they arranged months ago for the Christmas holiday. Here's a short list of important tips before you go to the airport:

• Print your boarding pass at home. That way, when you get to the airport, you can proceed directly to the bag drop. Check the airline site or call your travel agent to get a good-faith estimate on your out-of-pocket cost for baggage, and be prepared to pay. Make sure your bags are tagged inside and out.

• Allow extra time for security.

• Pick up some food for the flight inside the secure area at the airport.

• Remember to bring your credit card on board Alaska Airlines flights. No cash is accepted for meals or the in-flight entertainment.

• If you're traveling with kids, have them carry their own backpack with books, games and other goodies.

• Before you leave for the airport, confirm your flight, your seat assignments, your hotel arrangements and your rental car. Keep an eye on the weather. A storm in Seattle or Portland can impact the flight schedules here in Anchorage.

• If you're traveling internationally, check with your credit card company and let them know. Be sure and get a little currency prior to your arrival. Make sure your ATM card works. It's the best way to get cash on the go in a foreign country.

Wherever you're traveling, try and spread a little holiday cheer around. An extra helping of patience and good cheer goes a long way during this busy travel season.
