Kelter thriving for Team USA at championships

Defenseman Alev Kelter of Eagle River is tied for the tournament scoring lead among blueliners for undefeated Team USA through two days of play at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation's World Women's U-18 Championship in Fussen, Germany.

Kelter didn't provide any points in the Americans' 8-0 throttling of Germany on Tuesday, but she did net one goal and two assists in Monday's tournament-opening 17-0 thrashing of Russian. Kelter earned a plus-minus rating of plus 4 in each game, and her combined plus 8 is tied for fifth-best in the eight-team tournament.

Kelter, 17, last season helped Team USA win the inaugural World U-18 title. She plays for the Chugiak High boys team and the North Stars' U-19 girls team along with her twin sister, Derya, and both are headed to the University of Wisconsin next season.

The Americans today face their first real test of the tournament when they play Sweden (2-0). Sweden on Tuesday beat Russia 6-1 and on Monday topped Germany 8-1. Also undefeated in the tournament is Canada (2-0).
