Though his quadriceps still carried soreness from a 100-mile footrace in January, ultramarathoner Evan Hone of Eagle River on Sunday blitzed the field in a 50-kilometer trail run in California.
Hone, 31, won the Sycamore Canyon 50-K Trail Run in the Santa Monica Mountains in a course-record 4 hours, 19 minutes, 3 seconds, beating the previous standard by nearly an hour.
Hone finished more than 11 minutes ahead of runner-up Brian Krogmann of Los Angeles (4:30:29).
After taking up running only four years ago, Hone has quickly begun to make his mark in long races. In 2007, he won the running division of the multi-sport Little Su 50-K and finished third in the Humpy's Marathon.
In January, Hone finished 10th in the H.U.R.T 100-miler in Hawaii — Geoff Roes of Douglas won that race.
Sunday's race was actually a bit short of 50-K, checking in at 48.7-K, or
30.3 miles.
Even so, Hone again showed that ultramarathoning — anything longer than a standard 26.2-mile marathon — is his forte.
