Our view: School board

Seat B: Mia Costello Harvard grad, parent and former high school teacher Mia Costello stands out among the 13 candidates running citywide for this seat. She has a master's degree in education and won national recognition for designing a hands-on American government class. She has two small children and now works part time at Nine Star, a social service agency, coaching high school dropouts. Her training and experience at the front lines of local education make her the best choice.

Seat E: Kathleen Plunkett

Plunkett is former president of the Russian Jack Community Council, current chairman of the Anchorage Parks & Recreation Commission, and a member of the city Platting Board. She was school district volunteer of the year in 1998 for her work at Clark Middle School. And she was on the design committee for the new Williwaw School. Her impressive record of community service, and her ability to move government bureaucracy to get things done, make her the strongest candidate for this seat.

Seat F: Jeff Friedman

School board president Jeff Friedman has served on the board since 2003 and faces only token opposition from a novice challenger. He has led the board in a strong partnership with Superintendent Carol Comeau.

Seat G: Crystal Kennedy

Incumbent Crystal Kennedy has also been on the board since 2003 and is unopposed for re-election. She is a thoughtful board member who does her homework and deserves voter support.
