South still unbeaten in tournment

South remained undefeated in the state American Legion baseball tournament by outlasting Service 7-5 in a showdown between unbeaten teams Sunday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

In the late game, Chugiak faced Fairbanks in another battle between undefeated teams. The winner plays South at noon today at Mulcahy Stadium, with the winner advancing to a Wednesday semifinal game.

In other games Sunday, Wasilla and Dimond stayed alive by breezing to victories.

Wasilla staved off elimination for the second day in a row, again at the expense of an Anchorage team, by beating East 9-3 at Chugiak's Oberg Field. J.D. Mayo drove in three runs with three hits and Kyle Bovy pitched three shutout innings in relief to lead the Warriors. On Saturday, Wasilla bounced West to stay alive.

Dimond romped past Kenai 10-2 in the other loser-out game, pounding out four extra-base hits and scoring runs in each of the first four innings at Hermon Brothers Field.

The tournament continues in Anchorage and Palmer through Thursday.
