Award-winning poet Kane will read from work today

Back from picking up a $50,000 Whiting Writers' Award and launching her first book at an event in New York, poet Joan Kane will read from her work starting at 5:30 p.m. today at the Alaska Native Arts Foundation gallery, 500 W. 6th Ave. It will be the Anchorage author's first Alaska appearance since receiving the prestigious national prize Oct. 28.

The reading is part of the First Friday opening for "Sharing the Spirit," a group exhibition of contemporary Alaska Native art curated by abstract painter Holly Nordlum.

One of two other Alaska writers to have previously received a Whiting award, former Daily News columnist Seth Kantner, will present his own talk and reading at 7 p.m. Nov. 12, in the UAA Fine Arts Building, room 150.
