UAA freshmen Kayla Fry and Cam Brewington raced to decisive victories in Sunday's FIS Open giant slalom at Alyeska, and in doing so, each also captured the four-race overall titles.
Fry won the women's race by nearly two seconds, with teammate Sandra MacDonald second. In the overall standings, it was UAA's Ida Bjerka who finished second to Fry.
In the men's race, Brewington finished 1.71 seconds in front of teammate Chris Kollenberg, who also placed second in the men's overall standings.
Youngsters and visitors raced well in nearly perfect conditions on the Race Trail course. First-year J-1 Laura Crews of the Alyeska Ski Club finished fourth and teammate Gabriella Markel, a first-year J-2, was fifth. Prescott McLaughlin and Blake Pendleton, both first-year J-1s from Stratton Mountain in Vermont, finished fourth and fifth in the men's race, with McLaughlin only .07 seconds out of third. Alyeska Ski Club's Kevin Kelley was the top first-year male J-2, placing ninth.
The series overall was scored on World Cup points. The races had very low penalties, helping developing racers dramatically improve their points and start positions.
