Dimond, West Warwick top pools

Dimond Post 21 banged out two victories Saturday at Mulcahy Stadium to sit atop Pool A in the 16th annual BP Exploration American Legion baseball tournament, and West Warwick, R.I., won its game to sit atop Pool B.

Both teams are 3-0 entering today's final day of the tournament.

Dimond beat Chugiak Post 33, 10-2, in its afternoon opener, then dispatched Wasilla Post 35, 9-1, in an evening game.

West Warwick beat East Post 34, 12-3, and has outscored its opponents 49-6.

Dimond opened its day with a seven-run fifth inning to dispatch Chugiak (0-3).

Dimond owned a 3-2 lead before it blew the game open -- Dax Lauwers and Cory Clevenger each singled twice in the fifth and furnished an RBI. Vince Partusch added a two-run triple in the inning.

Lauwers went 3 for 4, and Erik Scott pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter with five strikeouts.

Colton Lauwers pitched a complete-game four-hitter and struck out seven, and also drove in a run, in Dimond's win over Wasilla. Tyler Thompson and Sagan Osborne each drove in two runs for the Lynx. J.D. Mayo drove in Wasilla's lone run.

West Warwick second baseman Dave Hopkins drove in four runs against East (0-3), third baseman Zach Bourgeois bagged four RBIs and shortstop Rich Lizotte homered and drove in two runs. Curtis Pogue pitched a complete game.

East left fielder Alexander Anderson went 3 for 3, scored one of East's runs and drove in another.

South finished pool play 2-1 with its victory over Service (1-2), which came when Kevin Frazier scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and escaped a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the bottom of the seventh.

South trailed 7-6 after six innings, but in the top of the seventh parlayed three Service errors and Sean Holmes' two-run hit into a 8-7 lead. Service used two walks and a Sam Eckhardt single to lead the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Frazier induced a fielder's choice to earn the save.

Eric Berglund drove in two runs for South and Bryan Baker went 3 for 4 with a stolen base.

Service's Aaron Miller went 3 for 4, with two triples and two RBIs, and Garret Brown went 3 for 4.

Fairbanks also finished pool play 2-1 with its win over Wasilla (1-2).

Fairbanks scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to support Tyler Bolles' complete-game, three-hit shutout. Bolles fanned four and walked just one. Wasilla's Josh Grissom pitched a complete-game two-hitter, but was undone by two infield errors and his balk in the sixth.

Fairbanks plated its runs on Curtis Wolfe's sacrifice fly and Grissom's balk.
