AROUND THE HORN

Joe Bircher and Jason Trivett combined on a four-hit shutout Saturday night to propel the Mat-Su Miners to a 7-0 victory over the Anchorage Bucs at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

Bircher surrendered two hits and struck out nine in seven innings. Trivett pitched two innings, gave up two hits and struck out one.

The victory kept the Miners tied for first place with the Fairbanks Goldpanners, who beat the Athletes in Action 2-1 in the first game of a double-header Saturday at Growden Memorial Park in the Golden Heart City.

The Goldpanners kept the gap huge between themselves and the AIA Fire, the team with which they share a ballpark -- Fairbanks has spent all season near or at the top of the ABL standings, and AIA has been a bottom-dweller.

Reliever Chance Smith worked out of a ninth-inning jam with the potential tying run in scoring position to earn the save in the Peninsula Oilers' 5-3 win over the Anchorage Bucs at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

Oilers starter Jake Sabol (3-0) earned the win -- he allowed two earned runs in five innings. Peninsula has won the first two games of the three-game series.

Eddie Rohan delivered a two-run double for the Bucs.
