AROUND THE HORN
• The Anchorage Bucs blanked the Athletes in Action Fire 1-0 to open the Scouts Showcase tournament at Mulcahy Stadium on Friday.
The Bucs have won four straight games and five of their last seven.
• The first-place Mat-Su Miners defeated the second-place Fairbanks Goldpanners 8-3 at Mulcahy on Friday, extending their lead in the standings to two games.
Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, the Miners scored four runs on four hits, stretching the lead to 8-3.
The Miners' Andy Mee went 2 for 3 with one RBI and two runs. Matt Applegate struck out five in seven innings for the win, and James Allen pitched the final two innings for the save.
• The Peninsula Oilers overcame an early deficit to beat the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 4-3 at Mulcahy on Friday.
The Pilots scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning but committed two crucial errors in the top of the fifth that aided the Oilers' comeback.
The Pilots scored one run in the bottom of the ninth to pull within a run but left the tying run stranded on second.
The Oilers' Eddie Orozco earned the win, and Jorge Marban pitched the ninth for the save.
The Pilots' Tom Jameson (1-6) took the loss.
