Legion names all-state team

Three players earned all-state honors as both pitchers and position players for their play this summer in American Legion baseball.

Willie Clark and Alex Whittaker of Fairbanks and Colton Lauwers of Dimond were among the top honorees on the team announced Friday by Legion officials. Whittaker and Lauwers are both starting pitchers who also play infield positions and Clark is a relief pitcher who also plays outfield.

Garnering coach-of-the-year honors were Chris Williams of South, John Butler of Kenai and Bob Hermes of Fairbanks.

Starting pitchers -- Bryan Beard, Service; Connor Carle, East; Alex Whittaker, Fairbanks; Colton Lauwers, Dimond; Sagan Osborne, Dimond; Josh Crapps, South.

Relief pitchers -- Willie Clark, Fairbanks; Dustin Birklid, Fairbanks.

Infielders -- Stephen Ferntheil, Service; Dylan Wisthoff, West; Derek Henry, Chugiak; Cameron Fritz, Chugiak; Alex Whittaker, Fairbanks; Cory Clevenger, Dimond; Colton Lauwers, Dimond; Cal McKim, South.
