Disc golf tournament raises 1,400 pounds of turkey

About four dozen disc golf buffs marked the reopening of the Westchester Lagoon Disc Golf Course last weekend by competing in the 10th annual Frozen Turkey Tournament.

The benefit raised nearly 1,400 pounds of frozen turkey for Bean's Cafe -- about 1,000 pounds more than last year, according to organizer Brian Gutzwiller.

"That's the best we've ever gotten, by far," Gutzwiller said.

The tournament marked the reopening of the course renovated over the past three months with a $30,000 challenge grant through the Anchorage Park Foundation. Baskets were moved to help prevent trail erosion; pin placements were changed; and wood chips were spread over heavily used areas of the nine-hole course.

Players from Kenai, Homer and Anchorage competed.

Westchester Lagoon is one of five disc golf courses in Anchorage.

A two-turkey donation got players into the tournament.
