UAA women set basketball record in victory

The UAA women's basketball team set a team record for free-throw percentage and extended its winning streak to six games with Saturday's 78-59 road win over Montana State-Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.

Hanna Johansson, one of six Seawolves who were perfect from the free-throw line, was also nearly perfect from the field. The 6-foot-2 junior post player led the 11th-ranked Seawolves with 19 points on 7 of 9 shooting, and hit five free throws.

The Seawolves (11-2, 2-0 GNAC) made 26 of 27 foul shots for a 96.3 percentage, breaking UAA's previous record of .947 (18 of 19) against Seattle Pacific in 1995 and Central Washington last season. They sank 15 of 16 in the first half while building a 39-26 halftime lead.

The Seawolves entered leading the conference in points allowed, opponents' field-goal percentage and steals. They continued their signature tough defense, swiping the ball 14 times and holding the Yellowjackets (5-6, 1-2 GNAC) to 38 percent shooting.

Johansson and junior guard Tijera Mathews each made four steals for the Seawolves, who forced 21 turnovers.

Alysa Horn, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Kodiak, scored 13 points for UAA and her five rebounds shared the team lead with Nikki Aden and Kaylie Robinson. Aden and Robinson each scored 10 points, combining for nine from the free-throw line.

The Seawolves scored the game's first nine points, part of a 15-3 run that put Billings in an early hole. The Yellowjackets, led by Beata Bak's 13 points, pulled within four points with seven minutes to go in the first half, but UAA answered with a 16-5 run.
