Wine of the week: 1,448

1,448 is the altitude of the Jeff Runquist Winery in Amador County, Calif. It is a fitting title to his kitchen-sink approach to this wine. Runquist wines are small batch productions of unique vineyards. He specializes in barbera, zinfandel, petite sirah and syrah. But not everything makes it into the individual bottlings and there are always leftovers. Runquist doesn't quite tell you what's in here but it is very tasty I can assure you. This is a spicy puppy with lots of expensive wood and deep smoky berries to smell. The wine is lush and rich on the palate. Black fruits, minute tannins and firm acids are exceedingly well balanced, lengthy and complex. What a lovely mouthful. Costs about $19.
