Erickson, Lane tops in Cup slalom

Experience counted Sunday in the Alyeska Cup boys slalom race in Girdwood, where Alex Erickson, a Junior 1 level racer, turned back younger racers with a strong second run that lifted him from third place to victory.

Kevin Kelly, a Junior 2 skier, finished second, four-tenths of a second back, and Nick Crews, also a J-2, grabbed third place, 1.55 seconds back.

Tanner Cabana and Morgan Haymans had the fastest first-run times, but second-run adventures left them in 10th and 11th place, respectively. J-1 and J-2 dominated; the top young racer was Junior 4 racer Garrett Mashburn, who was 14th.

Jordan Lane won the girls race for her third victory in four days at Mount Alyeska. She won both runs for a decisive victory over Gabrielle Markel, who was 1.2 seconds back. Sarah Lundgren finished third.

Excellent snow conditions kept race attrition low. Only five girls and five boys -- out of a total of 90 -- failed to finish both runs.

Though the Alyeska Cup wraps up today with another slalom, Sunday's race was the last of three Cup races that doubled as state championships for junior-level skiers. Lane captured the girls overall titles and Crews claimed the boys overall title.
