Anchorage doctor dies after Friday skiing accident

Casey Grove

A prominent Anchorage orthopedic surgeon, injured Friday in a skiing accident at Alyeska Resort, died Tuesday, according to a press release sent Wednesday afternoon on behalf of his family.

William J. Mills, 53, passed away with family nearby at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Mills had been on life support since shortly after Friday's accident.

Ski patrollers found him on the snow in the Ballroom section of Alyeska's North Face. He had previously been skiing with his son.

The rescuers, some of whom knew Mills because he had a close relationship with the patrollers, rushed him to the ambulance that brought him to Anchorage.

Many of Mills' organs were donated, according to his family.

Mills was an avid outdoorsman with a 21-year medical career, including time at the naval hospital in San Diego and work at hospitals in Washington and Alaska.

A memorial service for Mills will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center's Tikahtnu Room.
