Single-car crash kills driver, troopers say

PALMER -- A fiery car wreck killed one person Wednesday night on Knik River Road near Palmer, according to the troopers.

By late Thursday, troopers had not released any identifying details about the deceased. Investigators are still trying to identify the person, said trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters.

The early '90s model Pontiac failed to make a turn in the road, likely colliding with terrain off the road, Peters said.

A passerby called 911 and emergency responders found the car engulfed in flames. The resulting fire from the collision is making identification of the remains more difficult, Peters said. A medical examiner would likely have to use DNA or dental records to positively identify the remains, she said.

Troopers continued to work Thursday investigating the circumstances leading to the person's death, Peters said.
