Strick, Randazzo Jr. shine at NYO

A new generation of Native sports athletes put on a show Sunday at the Dena'ina Center, where the son and daughter of two of the games' great performers were among the stars.

Brian Randazzo Jr., whose dad was a legendary leaper who held numerous records at NYO, the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics and the Arctic Winter Games, won two events.

And Alice Strick, whose mom, the former Noel Gould, was a highly decorated competitor, tied an NYO record for the second straight day.

Strick tied the NYO one-foot high kick girls record by reaching 91 inches. On Saturday, she set an NYO record and tied the world record by going 78 inches in the two-foot high kick.

Randazzo on Sunday won the one-foot high kick with a 111-inch effort and grabbed victory in the Indian stick pull. The day before, he hit 101 hits in the two-foot high kick to set an NYO record.

Dajan Treeder also earned a spot in the NYO record book by traveling 151 feet, 1.5 inches in the girls seal hop Sunday, the final day of the three-day event sponsored by the Cook Inlet Tribal Council.
