Powered by two of the most dominating individual performances of the weekend, the girls teams from Grace Christian and Wasilla made history Saturday in Fairbanks by claiming their first state championships in track and field.
Grace Christian, which opened 17 years ago, took its first girls team title in overwhelming fashion, scoring more than twice as many points as anyone else to top the Class 1-2-3A competition at Lathrop High.
Leading the way for the Grizzlies was senior speedster Gabrielle Serventi, who captured victories in the 100, 200, 400 and ran a leg on a winning relay team. Those wins helped Grace amass 142 points, putting the Grizzlies far ahead of defending champion Anchorage Christian, the runner-up with 65.
Wasilla, which opened in 1973, got a record-setting run from Morgan Dampier en route to its decisive Class 4A victory. Dampier lowered her own state record in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 12.27 seconds, take more than a second off the 2:13.95 she ran last year.
Dampier also won the 400 to help the Warriors pile up 85 points to beat defending champion Dimond by nearly 30 points.
While there was no drama in the competition for the girls team titles, the boys side of things provided plenty of last-minute tension.
Dimond and Seward both won the final event of the day, the 1,600-meter relay, to nail down championships.
The Lynx edged Service in the Class 4A team standings, 74-64, and Seward nipped Grace by half a point to deprive the Grizzlies of a sweep of the Class 1-2-3A titles, 84.5-85.
The Seahawks earned their winning margin when Jacob Marshall, Brett Chase, Andrew Buchanan and Austin Gillespie teamed to win the final relay in 3:36.55, about five seconds ahead of second-place Grace.
